After 19 years, I have all my customers telling me, ‘This is the most authentic Ethiopian restaurant. Keep it up.’ That’s why I’m here from six in the morning until midnight. The customer feedback motivates me.
How did you end up moving to the U.S. and opening a restaurant?
My husband was very political and in opposition to the government in Ethiopia. They put him on a wanted list and put him in jail. After he got out of jail, we flew to Kenya. We applied for asylum to America. Before I opened this restaurant, there was no Ethiopian food when I came here. Nobody cooked like me, traditional food like kitfo. I made it and everybody liked it. I always wished to have my own restaurant. My husband motivated me.
